THE INSPIRATION

Several years ago, I was assigned to a rotation at The First Step House (residential substance abuse program) in Salt Lake City as part of my required medical school curriculum. I had no idea how powerful that brief experience would be for me as a medical student! My heart was torn as I learned from the participants in the program about the impact and power of addiction. Many had suffered so much sorrow in their lives because of their addictions. I was struck, however, with deep respect for everyone who was there choosing to fight for their lives – choosing to fight addiction! Through that experience and countless others in medical school, this much has become clear: real recovery and sobriety are possible. In fact, with continuing effort and support, it is possible to maintain recovery too! This is true for addictions of every kind.
